International High School Visual arts Exhibition

Art is one of the most worthy cultures for humans to appreciate and learn. It carries the traces of history, as well as the track of social development.

Recently, the SIPFLS International High School held an exhibition of student artwork from its Visual arts Program. Our twelfth graders from the IBDP visual arts program including; Wang Ruiwen (Gloria), Zhang Jingwen (Violet) and Yu Dongxuan (Danny), exhibited the outcome of their two-year arts study. Additionally, our eleventh graders from IBAP such as Jenny, Tina, Sherry, Linda and Sarah also shared their unique views on this art exhibition.

It took two years of exploration and research for our students to finally hold this exhibition. Visual arts refers to creations that use certain materials to create intuitive artistic images; including film and television, painting, sculpture, architectural arts, practical decorative arts and many other different forms, with a variety of modeling techniques. The subject also encourages students to explore the links between art and other disciplines; improving their creativity and critical thinking. Through artwork, one expresses his or her unique observations and understanding towards society and life, which also reflects his or her different understandings towards culture, social relations, gender and eras.

Two days before the exhibition, the teachers and students from the visual arts program spent almost the whole night arranging all the exhibition settings. The layout of each exhibition area was planned and designed by the students themselves, who hoped to guide the audience to appreciate the works by distinguishing different artistic themes. In this exhibition, you will see creative artworks in various forms, such as Chinese paintings, oil paintings, sculptures, board paintings, watercolor and a comprehensive use of materials.

It is gratifying to note that Wang Ruiwen, a student from IBDP12, participated in the annual international interdisciplinary competition organized by the UK charity, Never Such Innocence this year. She won fourth place out of 3181 works across 96 countries! She expressed her opinion towards conflict through her artworks. Her art pieces have strongly reflected what she feels about the phenomena historically or presently, on an international scale, whether in the present situation, or in wider society.

As the saying goes, there is painting in poetry and poetry in painting. If you don't read much, you can't paint with elegance; if you don't know what you are looking at, you can't regulate the painting in the right way. Through their works, these young artists interpreted their perceptions of life from different angles and in different forms.

Now let's hear how the students commented on the VA program:

If there's one thing I regret least about my time in high school, it was attending the visual arts program. During this period, I really enjoyed the process of learning arts, whether through portfolio, artistic creation or comparative analysis- I think it is very substantial and meaningful. During the learning process, I was grateful to have a serious, professional, enthusiastic and responsible teacher, who gave me valuable guidance and let me learn a lot of artistic knowledge and creative skills. Teachers often spoke with us about artistic inspiration and guided us to develop our critical thinking; helping me to gain more love and motivation for the arts. This course has not only allowed me to learn the arts in different dimensions, but also provided many opportunities for us to express our views on art, systematically helping me integrate into other disciplines in terms of mindset. I was delighted and moved to see the results presented in the exhibition, since I had a great sense of achievement! I miss every bit of learning in the VA classroom. I hope to continue to love and explore arts in the future!

                                                  -Y12IBDP Violet

When in primary school, I had a great interest in the arts and painting. Because of this, I did not hesitate to choose the VA program. Vicky, our teacher, always patiently pointed out the problems, and provided us with a lot of inspiration and suggestions in the process of completing the exhibition works. In the process of learning, he also taught us various painting techniques. These accumulated techniques eventually gave our exhibition the perfect ending. No pain, no gain. After submitting my final documents to the teacher- More than 20 pages of painstaking effort; I felt satisfied and as though it was all well worth my time. I think these two years of study have greatly helped me to gain a better understanding of arts, and also made me more impressed of this fascinating subject.

                                                - Y12 IBDP Gloria

Two years of VA study has benefited me a lot. This artistic journey has been fantastic, precious and unique. In the past, I always lacked innovative thinking and inspiration, and I was often distressed with my poor professional ability, so my VA study was full of twists and turns. When I was making works, it was too easy to make my ideas more concrete and expect to include all the content. Later, I finally had the courage to give up and understand that sometimes you have to give up in order to get. I learned to combine rationality with sensibility, undergo experiences and emotions of the protagonists in my everyday life, and calmly analyze what to do at each stage of my learning process. The VA journey brought me a different learning experience. This rare experience has also become an exclusive memory throughout my life.

- Y11 APDP Sarah

I love this VA program so much. I liked to discuss problems with my teachers and my classmates. The movies and books we shared with each other were not just paintings. We created art pieces through our own imagination. Different media was used to present different effects, expressing emotions and thoughts to others through one’s artworks.

-Y11 SADP Tina

Our VA students have spent countless days and nights to gain today's achievements! They were full of passion for the arts, and these works and achievements are the fruits of their IB and AP visual arts program labor, as well as the best summary and reward for their time and energy in high school! They used paper to interpret life, and wielded a pen to depict ideals. They used their actions to tell us: art seems to stay far away from us, but in fact it is everywhere.
