The main focus of the course is on language acquisition and the development of language skills. These include receptive, productive and interactive language skills which are developed through the study and use of a range of written and spoken material. Such material will extend from everyday oral exchanges to literary texts, and should be related to the target culture. The material should be chosen to enable students to develop mastery of language skills and intercultural understanding. 

 

The course comprises the core topics and the options at both SL and HL. At both SL and HL, teachers select two from the following five options. In addition, at HL, students study 2 works of literature 


The core and the options at both levels, as well as literature at HL, must be studied within the context of the culture of the target language.
